What I Want From You, The Reader…

I have to be clear about my intentions on why I choose to do this project.

There are multiple reasons on why I spend 5-6 hours of my day each day writing up to 5-6 articles. I have been interested in learning how to increase height for myself for many years now. It started really when I was 22 and that desire has come and gone.

I am now mostly content with my height but sometimes I do feel a slight twinge of envy when I see say another guy who is much taller than me. It makes me realize that I may never reach their great height. I fee like I will never be admired, liked, or respected like this other person who can command respect and awe just from standing there. I guess I could say that I am slightly above average in height and that should be enough for me. So why do I keep on writing this blog/writing?

Well, mainly because my main business is stalled for now. I started my own life coaching business and finding clients has been difficult. I have had 5 clients but most of them were unpaid. I moved to another country to test another market but it has been hard to break into the market. I am still trying to figure out how to do it. I gave myself half a year to test this other market in another ocuntry. If that doesn’t work out well, then I will go back and focus on my primary business.

In the back of my mind, I have always wanted to go back to school. The 3 areas I have only considered going into 1. Genetics, mainly so I can study auxology or the study of human growth and height so that I can maybe find a way through DNA manipulation to help others increase their size and maybe cure cancer. 2. Mechanical Engineering, I have always had a dream of designed and building the huge airplane engines and testing out fluid mechanics equations. 3. Neurosciene or psychology to learn more about the way the human brain works. I find the classes I sat in on like Cognitive Psychology or Social Psychology extremely fascinating.

I had studied engineering back in school ,and if I could go back I would probably choose either #1 or #2. I have already learned a lot about human psychology from my stint through learning hypnosis, NLP, ego defense mechanisms, and social engineering. However, I realize now that my desire to pursue a Ph. D in genetics is probably a pipe dream since there is so much course work and knowledge I would have to catch up to. I thought about doing physics but I realize I am not intelligence to be able to make through the course work at the Graduate Level. So if I go back to school, I would go into Mechanical Engineering. Of course that is just my long term goals.

For my real intentions for this blog, this will be my way and my outlet on my unfulfilled dream to be a geneticist or biomedical engineer who invents or discovers a way to help other people increase their height. I promise that I will slowly, add more and more to this website.

I have hoped that I can fuse my Life Coaching business with this website. I figured that I could probably offer some form of therapy or coaching for people who might be too obsessed about this subject. I know for a fact that people who become really dissatisfied with their height, which happens to be one of the most basic things which we have no real control with in our lives, can lead to great overall unhappiness in one’s life. If they let this one aspect of their life control their life, one day they can wake up and realized that they had spent the last 10 years chasing after an illusion. I can offer a system and program to help certain people add 1 inch to their height, and maybe in extreme cases 2 extra inches. I really do believe adding up to 2 inches (5 cms) to your height is possible through good stretching and testing the limits of human potential through a natural way. Beyond that, it is either some form of technique through a branch of either pseudoscience, eastern mysticism, or biotechnology like DNA manipulation or Stem Cells Implantation.

I do have a system which I created which can help people get over their issues with their size and find a better way to interpret their situation in their life and find something else to put their energy and focus on. It will definitely be cheaper than paying tens of thousands of dollars going to have one’s legs increased by a few centimeters. Please do consider me and my coaching company when you feel that your desire to increase your height may be ruining your life and destroying your ability to be happy and enjoy your life. I really can help you through your personal and mental issues and insecurities. I have spent over 3 years now learning about human psychology, self improvement, and personal development. I have experience with Eastern Philosophy, meditation, hypnosis, NLP and Cognitive Psychology. I understand since I went through it myself and came out of the other end (relatively) normal.

If you are just down or depressed and need someone to talk to, just give me an email by clicking the button at the upper right corner of this blog. I will be also there to give some free advice and an ear to listen to if you can’t pay or want to give the fees.

Eventually the number of new and fresh ideas for how to increase one’s height will be gone and many of my posts will just be repeats of old posts. I have seen this happen with other blogs which tries to go into this subject. There is a threshold which I know I will also hit one day and I will have covered say 100% of all the possible ways or idea that humans have come up on how to increase their height. That day may come 3-4 years from now, After I have written over 2000 articles and posts discussing every possible idea.

Here is an important question that I have asked myself:

“How much longer will I keep on writing and working on this project and blog until I give up and move one to something else?”

Answer:

This project will be an on and off thing where I will try to write 4 entries these day, then move to 2 entires, then 1 entry a day, then 1 entry every other day, until finally I will write probably once a week. I promise that this project is something that has always been inside of me which has been trying to get out for the longest time, since I was at least 22. This project is the manifestation of over half a decade of personal research and analysis. I plan to continue to work on this project and update this resource for height increase at least once every week for at least 5 years. I want to write as much as possible until I cover everything that there is on this subject. I want to cover every aspect and endeavor of humans desire to be taller. I truly believe that this area of study can be completely covered by one person. I want to make this site and blog to be the greatest, most honest, completely clear resource on the internet for anyone who has ever desired to be taller and put the phrase” How to grow taller” into Google. I want people who research for a solution and technique to their height increase desires to found this site as the first link and resource that pops up when they search on the internet.

When I look at my fellow H.I.S like Tyler Christopher Davis who writes for his site Quest For Height, I can only say that the whole process he is doing seems to have no sight in end. There is no clear solution that he has found in the 4 years he has been writing his Quest For Height blog. Do I intend to reach the same state as him, only pushing out scientific journal entry articles which hint at the possibility of using their new found results into being implementing into height increase? No, If there comes a point when I really that the whole endeavor is hopeless and there is nothing we can do, I will write one final post and say my good byes.

Clues To Height Increase From A Study Of Pygmies

I was going through the internet looking for interesting articles to read last night and somehow I found myself on the Wikipedia article on pygmies located HERE. I was fascinated at these groups of people so I started to read more about them. What really caught my eye in the article was a small section where they tried to explain why the pygmy tribes evolved into such a short stature.

“” Evidence of heritability has been established which may have evolved as an adaptation to low ultraviolet light levels inrainforests. This might mean that relatively little vitamin D can be made in human skin, thereby limiting calcium uptake from the diet for bone growth and maintenance, and leading to the evolution of the small skeletal size characteristic of pygmies.

Other explanations include lack of food in the rainforest environment, low calcium levels in the soil, the need to move through dense jungle, adaptation to heat and humidity, and most recently, as an association with rapid reproductive maturation under conditions of early mortality. (See also Aeta people#Demographics.) Other evidence points towards unusually low levels of expression of the genes encoding the growth hormone receptor and growth hormone relative to the related tribal groups, associated with low serum levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 and short stature. “”

From the passage, I finally figured out the link between Vitamin D , Calcium, and how calcium is really absorbed into the body system. In addition, I also understood the correlation between rapid maturity and height better. The human body needs Vitamin D. Apparently we can take Calcium as a supplement to help with our body growth and density but if there is no Vitamin D that the Calcium can not be properly absorbed into the human body. Recently, I have been following the blog by Dave Asprey on his blog the Bulletproof Executive and he mentioned the need by people for Vitamin D3, and he suggests that we need 1000 UI for every 25 lb of our body weight. So form me, I would need like 7000-8000 UI. I went back to the book the 4 Hour Body by Tim Ferriss and he also mentioned the need for Vitamin D3 . This got me really interested in learning more about the Vitamin D. Apparently we as people really lack Vitamin D. We really need it and the sunlight can give us that Vitamin D. However, sunlight has been given a bad name and Asprey in one of his podcasts say that we should not need sunscreen. That really went against the knowledge of convention. Sunscreen is believed by me (and I assume many others) to be a protective coating we put on to protect ourselves from the sunray from giving us sun burns and eventually Skin cancer. Asprey seems to suggest to me that we should through away the sunscreen and just focus on getting the good sunlight. Apaprently 95% of people who get a blood test to see how their level of Vitamin D intake is highly deficient in it! I now figure out that the importance of getting enough Vitamin D in the body so that Calcium can actually be abosrbed to allow for bone growth and strength.

The other part was to show that apparently if the physical maturity is increased to an earlier age, the eventual full height is decreased. That does make sense since girls are on average shorter than guys. They go through physical maturity and puberty usually earlier than guys so while it is often common to see the girls in Middle School taller than the boys, by High School that trend has reversed as the boy’s height can started to catch up as they finally hit their growth spurts associated with puberty.

I decided to do more research on pygmies to look for more clues on how height is stunted or evolved to be smaller by the pygmies. If I can figure out what exactly was the cause and reason for the pygmies short stature, maybe I can create a method or system that does the exactly the opposite of what happens to the pygmies to increase their height.

Along the way I found this blog which talks about the correlation between the pgymies short stature and their short life term. I will highlight the points which I believe are the most important. Click HERE.

Short lives, short size – why are pygmies small?

Posted on 19 December, 2007 by Ed Yong

For decades, anthropologists have debated over why pygmies have evolved to be short. Amid theories about their jungle homes and lack of food, new research suggests that we have been looking at the problem from the wrong angle. The diminutive stature of pygmies is not a direct adaptation to their environment, but the side-effect of an evolutionary push to start having children earlier.

Andrea Migliano at the University of Cambridge suggests that pygmies have opted for a ‘live fast, die short’ strategy. Their short lives gives them very limited time as potential parents, and they have adapted by becoming sexually mature at a young age. That puts a brake on their pubescent growth spurts, leaving them with shorter adult heights.

Little people

Pygmies are technically defined as groups of people whose men are, on average, shorter than 155cm (or 5 feet and an inch for the Imperial-minded). Strictly speaking, the word is restricted to several ethnic groups of African hunter-gatherers, like the Aka, Efe and Mbuti. But the world is surprisingly replete with shorter-than-average groups who also bear the colloquial moniker of pygmies, including some from Brazil, Bolivia, South-East Asia and Papua New Guinea.

The earlier explanations for a short stature worked for some of these groups, but they could never account for all of them. Some scientists suggested that smaller people move more easily through dense jungles, but some pygmies live outside forests. Other theorised that they could maintain their body temperature more easily, but many live in cool and dry climes.

One of the more popular theories put forward by Jared Diamond suggested that small people are more resilient to starvation and malnourishment when food becomes scarce. But this can’t be the whole story for Africa groups like the Turkana and Massai manage to be some of the tallest people on Earth despite facing similarly unstable food supplies!

Migliano found more evidence against this theory by comparing the growth patterns of three groups of genuine pygmies – the Filipino Aeta and Agta, and the central African Biaka – with the shortest Americans, whose malnourished childhoods landed them in the bottom 0.01% of the population in terms of adult height.

Together with Lucio Vinicius and Marta Lahr, she found that the true pygmies grew slightly more slowly than the undernourished Americans, their growth spurts ended much earlier, at age 12 rather than 15. Typically, groups who lack free-flowing calories grow slowly over a long time – the pygmies’ pattern matched the first part but not the second. The pygmies’ growth curves disproved the malnutrition idea, but their lifespan pointed Migliano towards a better explanation.

Early death

Pygmies around the world are short in life expectancy as well as height, with the average adult dying at 16-24 years of age. Only 30-50% of children survive to the age of 15 and less than a third of women live to see menopause at 37. Taller African groups like the Ache or Turkana have lower adult mortality and twice the average lifespan, and compared to them, the pygmies’ pattern is closer to that of chimps.

Migliano argues that their early deaths are the driving force behind both their small size and their shorter growth spurts. It pays pygmies to divert resources away from growth and towards having children as early as possible, to compensate for their limited years. Indeed, Migliano found that they reach a peak of fertility earlier than taller groups.

In general, people who grow taller and larger tend to be more fertile and have larger and more capable offspring. That’s obviously advantageous but not if adult mortality is so low that you may not get a chance to have children at all. In this perilous situation, natural selection favours those who mature and reproduce early, to the cost of their growth.

Migliano’s theory has one important missing piece that needs to be filled in – why do many pygmies die early? It is here that the other earlier explanations for their short size may come in, including tropical diseases, thick jungle environments, hot climates and poor nutrition. None of these factors alone can account for pygmy evolution around the world, but Migliano speculates that one or more of them could lower the life expectancies of different populations.

If she’s right, it means that small body size could be an example of convergent evolution, where different groups of people in disparate parts of the globe independently evolved similar solutions to the shared problem of short and hazardous lives.

Me: It would seem that the theory proposed by Migliano makes a lot fo sense from an evolutionary point of view but does not explain the part of why pygmies live such a short age. It makes sense that if I am supposed to live only to be 25 (which I have already passed), I should spend less of my years trying to reach sexual maturity, and spend more of that time reproducing to pass on my genes. If I was given a choice to either have 2 children or wait 5 years to grow another say 5-6 inches, when my lifespan is supposed to be just 25 years, I would take the first option.

The take-away I am getting from this amazing study is that to increase height and avoid short stature, we want to try to delay sexual maturity from occurring to give the young children more time to grow in height. This can involve getting the children to be more active, to release their growth hormones, eat healthier food, and get more sleep. Studies have shown that kids who are inactive, who eat junk food, and who don’t sleep well all seem to go through sexual maturity faster than their counter parts, as well as decrease the rate of their height growth when they are going through the puberty process. Coincidently, this was the exact reason why Robert Wadlow grew to his amazing height. Apparently his hypertropic pituitary gland produced so much growth hormones that the hormones actually prevented him from ever being able to go through puberty and reaching that stage in development where sexual maturity happens. Wadlow even age the age of 22, right before He did, had not gone through puberty.

The other big take-away is that to allow for maximum calcium intake to grow our bones when we are in development, we need to be able to absorb and take as much Vitamin D as possible.

Product Review V, Ginza Kojima Leg Lengthening Device

This device I actually found from the Make Me Taller Boards. You can find the specific discussion HERE. In the discussion, two links are provided that apparently shows this device that supposed to lengthen a person’s legs. The two links are for the actual device called Height Speed Machine found HERE and the main website page found HERE.

The company name is Ginza Kojima and the machine that is supposed to lengthen your legs is called the Height Speed Machine.

Not only does the company offer to increase your leg length, it also has a device that can make your face smaller. Yes, in a lot of the East Asian countries, having a small face is considered beautiful and many women desire it and in many plastic surgery clinic in Seoul, there are doctors that cut off parts of people’s face and jaw to make the face look smaller.

I personally can not read Japanese but can only use the Google Translate on my Internet Browser to do the translation. This is the main page for height lengthening translated:

In order to lighten the burden on the body, we perform leg surgery one by one. You can see the obvious difference in length between two legs in the pictures that show a man lying on his back with his left leg stretched. Click the pictures to enlarge them.

Experiencing program of height lengthening now

Mr. Rashid is an international student from Bangladesh. He receive treatment of height lengthening in Kojima now, and tries to extend 10cm height. His comments as follows.

It is a pleasure for me to introduce myself. I am Mohammed Mamunur Rashid.
I am a student of Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. I found this clinic name through internet and personally. I met with Mr. Kojima and doing height lengthening program clinic here in Japan Ginza Tokyo. I have already gained this program from 162cm to 165.8cm.
It is also a pleasure for me to introduce Mr. Kojima, he is the only one prominant bone lengthening expert in the world.

Now, Mr. Rashid answers your question and inquiry in English. Please view contact page.

Moreover, we measure bone density with the cooperation of the nearby medical facilities and perform surgery by the method that is the most suitable for our customer’s condition. There is no need for you to worry about anything.

Me: As most of the member of the board has agreed upon, the machine is most likely a scam that doesn’t work. I agree with them. Even if it works and can give you a few centimeters in height, it may be cheaper to go with another route, maybe even just through old fashion stretching or quicker surgical options. The company’s main page actually offer more than just limb lengthening, but also limb correcting by making bow legs straight, feet aligned , make pelvis thinner, and vertebrate curvature decreased. I think the claim by the company is that they can make bone and orthopedic changes without surgery. Run as far away from this product as possible.

Product Review III, GrowthMax Plus

Today I plan to do two reviews of product out in the internet space that makes the claim that they will help you grow taller.

The first product is an “all-natural, multivitamin, nutritional “supplement called GrowthMax Plus. One of the websites that sell this supplement is found HERE. On the website, the sellers claim this which I quote,

“”GrowthMAX Plus® is our revolutionary, trademark, patent-pending nutritional supplement that is taking the nation by storm. GrowthMAX Plus® is the only all-natural, completely safe nutrition supplement that enhances your height potential to the maximum your genetic composition will allow. GrowthMAX Plus® height increase supplements are formulated to provide your body with the vitamins, minerals, trace elements, enzymes, anti-oxidants, herbal extracts, neuronutrients, flavonoids, carotenoids, and essential amino acids and nutrients it needs to grow taller, plus feel healthier and more energized. This is a safe, all-natural formula that will increase your height by promoting new generation of tissues, bones, and cartilage. Even the disks in your spine will experience regeneration and becomes stronger and you’ll grow 2-6 inches taller. “”

Me: So this product states that it is a special mixture of nutrients that will allow the generation of “tissue, bones, and cartilage”. However, the product seems to do more than jsut make you grow taller. It also has other benefits which they talk about here.

Besides giving you the extra inches you desire, GrowthMAX Plus® has been proven to increase blood circulation, improve digestion, increase metabolism, reduce tiredness, slow-down aging, smoothen breathing and promote general good health. Here is a full list of benefits you get from using GrowthMAX Plus®:

  • Grow 2-6 inches taller

  • All-natural active ingredients

  • Discreet Shipping

Me: Now that is a long and amazing list. Supposedly it “prevents cardiovascular disease”, “slows the aging process to prevent wrinkles”, “increase confidence”, and give you “clear, healthy vision”. I wonder why is it that if this miracle supplment is not sold at a more massive scale if the great benefits are so many and they say that they is “no unpleasant side effects”? The FDA and the entire medical community would be going crazy if this product was actually released into market. This type of product would change the world and revolutionize many medical fields. If it can prevent cardiovascular disease like heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure, it should be able to save just in the US over $100 billion in annual medical bills attributed to heart disease alone. If it really does slow the aging process, women will be coming in droves to get this product to make themselves look and stay younger. In the youth obsession society of the US, this product would instantly become one of the best selling things ever!

So how does the product actually work? On the site they state,

“”GrowthMax Plus® makes you grow taller by using all natural ingredients to make your body respond with an increase in growth hormone production. These hormones will lengthen the cartilage between each vertebrae in your spine, making it longer and increasing your height. They will also help to strengthen and thicken the cartilage in your joints, including your knees. Over time, the cartilage will be replaced with the calcified bone matrix. This will add to your body’s ability to respond to stress and injury. The length of the spine in the upper part of the body is what makes a person taller or shorter and contributes to over a third of a person’s height. There are over thirty individual bones in a person’s spine which are held together by tissue known as a ligament. Only the two that sit lowest in the spine are immoveable as these are what form the back of the pelvis. All of the other bones are always moveable and so are not fused together. The formula in Growthmax Plus® works by lengthening the discs between each bone, or vertebrae, which increases the entire length of the spinal column and so increases height in the process. The cartilage in a person’s body can grow, thicken, adapt and remodel. Furthermore, Growthmax Plus® strengthens and thickens the cartilage in the body’s joints which further adds to the increase in height.””

Me: So I guess the specially formulated supplement works by lengthening the disks between each vertebrate which increases the entire length of the spinal column, thus increasing the height. The supplement is supposed to signal to our pituitary gland to produce and secrete more growth hormone into our system , which can then lenghten the cartilage between each vertebrate making it longer. The science does make some sense. The formula is supposed to be patent pending.

Her is my conclusion about this product. It is claimed by the makers that the formula is some secret herbal formula so obviously the people will not tell you what exactly is in the supplement. We could do a chemical analysis on the supplement by using quantitative and qualitative methods to get maybe 10 of the biggest compounds found in it. My guess is that these are the big ones found in it due to my studies of other compounds

1. Glucosamin & Chondroitin Sulfate for supposed cartilage and bone improvement,

2. Calcium with Vitamin D,

3. Vitamin D3,

4. Vitamin B6 & B 12,

5. Some Beta Carotene for the eyes,

6. Creatine for muscle and masss building,

7. Arginine, Glysine, Lysine, Orthinine, and Glutamine for protein addition, what would actually work if the growth plates was not closed

8. Some Ginseng and Garlic extract for immune system function,

9. and maybe a little of other things.

Let me say this. This product may help one feel a little better and may provide minimal effect on one’s overall health but it will not do anything for height increase for  a person who has their growth plates closed. There is nothing in the compound that actually does the first step which is to stimulate the pituitary gland to release HGH. Even if the pituitary gland was stimulated, the excess HGH would go towards muscle growth and increase of size in the horizontal direction with an increase in bone width and density, instead of vertical growth. We are all familiar of basketball and football players who inject themselves with HGH to allow for muscle growth and increase physical performance. If this product worked at all, that is what it would do for the person, not increase height. As for the increase in the disks, the HGH does not actually increase the disks, but the bones. The cartilage between the disks and vertebrate bone can not increase that way. From the Wikipedia article on intervertebral disks

“”Discs consist of an outer annulus fibrosus, which surrounds the inner nucleus pulposus. The annulus fibrosus consists of several layers of fibrocartilage. The strong annular fibers contain the nucleus pulposus and distribute pressure evenly across the disc. The nucleus pulposus contains loose fibers suspended in a mucoprotein gel with the consistency of jelly. The nucleus of the disc acts as a shock absorber, absorbing the impact of the body’s daily activities and keeping the two vertebrae separated. “”

I can guarantee that height increase will not happen, much less add the “2-6 inches’ that is claimed by the product. The product does not work for heigh increase, but the herbal supplement might give one a slight increase in energy and muscle definition from the proteins, but not for it’s intended sold benefit. So in conclusion, it is a scam.

The 28 Year Old Woman Who Was Still Growing

This is a story that I remembered which I thought was very unique. 3 years ago I had just lost my job from the great recession in 2009 and I found myself lost on my purpose for a good 2 months. During those two months, I decided that the only thing I should do was just work on improving my skills and learn as much as I can before I found work again. So I would spend about 4 hours a day in the bookstore just reading as much as I can about business, entrepreneurship, marketing, and economics.

On one of those days of intense study, I noticed a rather tall girl walking through the stacks at Barnes & Noble. I was bored so I decided to make the comment to her that she was very tall, maybe 6′ 0″ tall or even bigger. She was quick to thank me but also state that she was still growing. I was amazed at her claim and asked her to explain herself. She told me that she had recently wen to see her personal doctor for her annual checkup and he had measured her height to be 5′ 11.33″, but from her 5′ 11″ which she had previously been measured at the year before. Now, 1/3rd of an inch may not seem like much but when you are in your late 20s and you are a female, that really makes me wonder.

So I let go of all social etiquette and grilled her on this miraculous event. I asked her about her age and she said she was 28. Then she stated something which I remember to this day which went something along like this, “yeah, apparently you can still be growing up until you are 30” . I never asked whether she was talking about men or women, or both but I guessed that from the context of the conversation we were talking about, she might have been referring to both men and women.

After a while, I realize that I didn’t have any other question so she left and went on browsing books. I sat back down and wondered for the entire day about her comment. This was during the time when I was going through my height increase obsession and that is why I remembered this woman so well.

So should I listen to this women who seemed to state something which most doctors don’t believe in, that the human body can keep on growing until the age of 30?

When I look back on that specific time, I realize one critical element which she might have never consider. The girl was rather overweight, and she stooped a lot. In a way, she could only be described as “big”, not just tall or “fat”, but big. She was proportionally very big in all parts of her body, but not in a acrogemalic way. I would assuem that she had tall genes and came from a “big” family. She was the average American large caucasian female with a large frame. At the time, I remembered that she was wearing really thin flip flops, maybe to try to decrease her amazing height. She did not look like the type of girl who has ever wanted to , or needed to wear heels in her life. She stooped and tried not to stand up straight again to divert attention away from her natural height.

My guess now is that she probably had at least 1 inch of hidden height that she purposely tried to hide so that she wouldn’t appear taller than she was already. She seemed to allow her spine to compress down and curve so that she didn’t have to show herself. I would have never have guessed that she was ONLY 5′ 11.33″ but at least 6′ 0″. Her claim that she grew 1/3rd of an inch was that the docotr measured her either in the morning where the height is higher or she decided to actually stand up straighter and improve her posture for the height measurement with her doctor.

At the end, I can only make my own claim on her new found height and dismiss her statement was not true. However, what if she was right and that we do grow until we are 30? That would be truly interesting.

Grow Taller By Playing Basketball, Or Not

I have read through a few of the forums which new members asks the older member whether they should start playing basketball because it seems like basketball players are very tall.

The reasoning they probably do is that they see the cause first which they think is playing basketball and then they believe that causes the effect, which is that the players grow taller from it. As the famous quote goes, “one should be intelligence to recognize the difference between correlation and causation”. So the questioner is making a case of causation in this case where it is really a correlation, or even the reverse correlation.

More like the case is that people are tall first and that is the cause. The effect is that people and basketball coaches approach them (and sometimes hound them like with the story of 7′ 4″ Mark Eaton) about whether they play basketball that they eventually give in to the peer pressure and join in to try out basketball. Once they realize that their height is a huge advantage in the game and they find that they are relatively athletic and can play the game, they decide to continue to play and end up in basketball. Just look at the unique case of 7′ 9″ Sun Ming Ming. Because of his amazing height, he was given a chance by the NBA at the age of 27 with no prior basketball experience to work out and try out to make it to the NBA.

There has been a few theories going around that the intense anareobic movement and jumping involved in basketball allows the pituitary gland release more growth hormone into one’s system than being only sedentary. That is absolutely true, and I would guess that if one started to play basketball at a young enough age where the growth plates have not fused, one would be say 1 inch taller than if one did not play basketball or exercise at all. So yes, in this special case of where one exercises, there will be a slight increase in the overal maximum height when one still is growing.

The other main theory that people try to use to explain the causality of basketball and growing taller is that the constantly jumping involve in basketball causes the shinbones in the lower legs to develop microfractures. The microfractures can then heal itself , making the bones harder, thicken and longer. That is a good theory too but one has to remember that any none thickening of bone done from body healing will be in the horizontal direction so the bone will get thicker, not longer. The microfractures may exist but they are not numerous enough to create the type of porosity needed to actually push the outer edges of the fractures out by the longitudal direction.

In conclusion, please understand that the factor of playing basketball, and being tall is not a causal effect. Most of the time, people playing because they are tall, not that they play basketball to become tall.
